On Wednesday 9th July 2014, the BiG Young Entrepreneurs Club held an end-of-year event to celebrate another successful year of supporting young entrepreneurs in the Sheffield area.
We welcomed a number of guests to the event, including representatives from the University of Sheffield’s Enterprise Centre, Sheffield Inventors Group and training provider LifeSkills (http://www.learnaliving.co.uk/)
Joyce Gray from the Sheffield Inventors Group spoke to BiGYEC members regarding the monthly group meetings, which are held at Sheffield Central Library, and are always welcome to all budding entrepreneurs and inventors. The Sheffield Inventors Group is similar to BiGYEC, however it’s a group for all ages, bringing together a range of inventors who have a variety of skills and knowledge.
Samantha Deakin, from the University of Sheffield’s Enterprise Centre, also came to the event to let members know about what ‘Startup Weekend’ is all about. It’s an awesome experiential learning opportunity that brings together people from all backgrounds and experiences to build concepts into viable products in just 54 hours.
Samantha also ran an exciting workshop, which offered a quick taster of the kind of activities that are run throughout the Startup Weekend. The workshop consisted of groups working together to design a product or service based on two entirely random words. The winners of the workshop received Meadowhall gift vouchers!
Helen Foster from LifeSkills explained how her training centre on Carver St works. It’s an alternative to school or college for 16-24 year olds who want to gain skills and qualifications for a better chance of employment. Its special appeal is that it’s small and offers a personal, caring environment with a small ratio of students to staff compared to mainstream provision.
The past academic year has seen a range of entrepreneurs and business owners attend BiGYEC workshops to speak to our members about a variety of topics such as marketing, effective team work, innovation, branding amongst other topics.
If you’ve never been to a BiGYEC after school workshop, come along, have fun and be inspired. We look forward to seeing you all soon!
